About
each shaped over generations to thrive in their native environments. This assortment celebrates genetic diversity and vibrant, colorful plumage, offering a truly unique mix for your flock. Perfect for those who value heritage breeds, hardiness, and the beauty of naturally varied chickens, every order is a living showcase of preservation and variety.
A landrace is a locally developed population of animals or plants shaped over generations through a combination of natural selection and traditional, informal human stewardship. Refined over long periods of time, landraces are valued not only for their productivity, but for their deep adaptation to the environments in which they evolved. Their resilience, hardiness, and distinctive traits are the result of centuries of gradual selection. For example, the Swedish Flower Hen developed across rural Sweden as a hardy, self-sufficient farm bird, naturally selected for vigor, foraging ability, and dependable laying in a challenging northern climate. Preservation of these landraces is essential to safeguarding rare genetics and agricultural heritage that cannot be recreated once lost.
As of 2026, the landraces stewarded on our farm include Shetland Hen, Swedish Flower Hen, Ölandsk Dwarf, Svart Hona, Icelandic, and the Vale of Haspengouw. Images on this page offer examples of breeds you may receive. Each assortment is packed according to current egg production and hatch availability, so no two orders are identical. We will add different colored leg bands to the different landraces so that you will be able to confidently identify them. Pricing reflects the cost per day-old chick and you may order as few as one or as many as you wish.
Orders of 1–3 chicks are guaranteed to include one breed; orders of 4–5 will include at least two breeds; and orders of 6 or more will include a minimum of three different breeds. We always strive to include as much variety as possible. You are welcome to mix and match breeds or assortments to meet our six-chick shipping minimum.
