How many of us can trace our family roots for almost 1,500 years ago? The Tomaru is a chicken breed that can make that claim. It originated in the T’ang Dynasty (618-907 AD) in China and later migrated to Japan where it was named, treasured, and cultivated for its unique blend of remarkable traits. The breed is most noted for the rooster’s lengthy baritone crow; when fully mature the call may go as long as 25 seconds. These are also longtail fowl. The tails of the roosters can reach three to four feet in length. And, the Tomaru have excess black pigmentation in their skin that gives them an undeniably exotic look.

We have very much enjoyed this breed at Greenfire Farms, and our birds show the deep black pigmentation associated with the breed. We find them to be well-mannered in the coop. Pecking of other chickens is rare. They lay a medium-size tinted egg in good quantities. With their shimmering black feathers and noble stance they make excellent lawn ornaments for the chicken keeper looking for something rare and beautiful.
