Some accounts even suggest that as early as the 12th century, tenants paid their rent with two Crevecoeur capons. The breed’s prestige endured through the centuries, earning honors at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855 and later being described in detail by Louis Bréchemin, an influential figure in poultry farming, in 1894.

The Crevecoeur reached the height of its fame in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. An official standard was accepted in 1909. During this period, breeders favored extravagant plumage, selecting for birds with impressively large crests. However, these oversized crests often impaired the birds’ ability to forage and defend themselves from predators. As more practical and productive foreign breeds were introduced, the Crevecoeur gradually fell out of favor, regardless of their excellent meat quality. By the mid-20th century, the breed had nearly vanished. A determined poultry enthusiast named Jean-Claude Périquet revived the breed in the 1970s, earning grand prizes at poultry exhibitions for his exquisite Creves.

The Crevecoeur was first imported to the United States in 1852, 1867, and again in 1870, but it never achieved widespread popularity, as it was considered “too sensitive” for many American climates. Mature roosters are notably dense and full-bodied, making them a perfect choice for homesteaders or poultry enthusiasts who appreciate hefty roos! Hens begin laying at around 6-7 months of age, producing approximately 120 white eggs per year. They rarely go broody, so a quality incubator is recommended if you plan to hatch chicks. Occasionally, some roosters may exhibit aggression toward people. We recommend excluding these boys from breeding, instead selecting for milder temperaments, as is more in line with their breed standard.
