We raise TX Longhorn cattle. It is my intention, once we get settled on the land, to cross fence and rotate the cows through several pastures. I plan on building a coop onto a trailer and move it from pasture to pasture behind the cattle. I am thinking it will take anywhere from 50-100 chickens to accomplish the task of cleaning up behind the cows. As I was writing this it dawned on me an alternative may be to build a smaller permanent coop in each pasture. Will have to give this some more thought. Any one that reads this feel free to offer up suggestions.

We are just getting started with our Birchen Marans and they are still pricey to my way of thinking. I have lived long enough to know I will not be making money on these birds. The goal is to breed the birds and keep them as good as we received or make improvements as we can. I first have to make myself happy with what I am doing. I attended my first bird show this past weekend in College Station TX. I was very surprised by the lack of quality in most of the birds. The Marans we just purchased were much larger and better looking than the birds at the show. We have BLRW running the yard that are culls that could easily have won in this showing. It was truely a surprise to see the LACK of quality as well as the number of sick birds brought to a showing.

An honest rendition of the way it was done. The way it ought to be done! Not growing up in a rural or hunting environment I struggled when it came time to pass on such traditions to my children. The best I could do was to raise a few rabbits for slaughter.

Thank you so much for the explanation of "landrace" and the variable colorations. It showed me what I am looking for in a backyard flock.. I can have a few hens with one rooster and still be able to tell them all apart. As an artist, part of the joy of chickens is the look of a variety of them in the yard. That is part of what appeals to me in the "flower girls";-)

I love this design. We live in Hawaii and have very mild weather. My first coop we designed like many chicken coops that have the little hen house with the gang plank and little opening for the birds to go inside. Later we realized this closed up hen house idea was unnecessary here where the weather never gets colder than 45 degrees. So I have been searching and searching for open air coop ideas.
Love yours and will be building something very similar soon!

This past summer I was writing a novel. It's backdrop was a vineyard in Illinois. I started researching the role of chickens as a possible means of insect control and came across Greenfire Farms. I fell in love with your gorgeous breeds! I even made myself a desktop picture because your chicks (from your blog) were so cute! Thought you might enjoy seeing it :) http://www.sandrabazinet.com/images/Baby_Chicks_GreenfireFarms.jpg
I live in an urban area, but someday, maybe I'll have a place for your beautiful birds!
