For more than 30 years and spanning two continents, Bev Davis has kept and refined marans, elevating the breed, improving established varieties, and creating completely new varieties of these remarkable birds.

Starting in her native England, and for the past several years in Florida, Bev has amassed a treasure trove of marans knowledge. Bev’s grasp of marans is encyclopedic, and she has the same easy familiarity with the workings of the marans genome that a master chef might have with his signature recipe. Because of her passion for the breed and record of accomplishment, Bev was elected president of the Marans Chicken Club USA.

For decades Bev has selected her marans to emphasize the breed’s greatest distinction: very dark brown eggs. Her birds’ eggs have won many competitions at poultry shows. She focused on egg color as the foundation of her breeding program, and after achieving intensely dark brown eggs, refined her flocks to address other issues such as body conformation, feather color, leg feathering, and eye color. She misses no detail when assessing a bird for her breeding flocks. She rigorously breeds to the written standard, and her birds show a rare level of refinement for the breed.

Bev has traveled to Greenfire farms and established breeding flocks to supply marans enthusiasts in the United States, freeing her to focus on her ongoing breeding projects.
