I think that one of the main purposes for males is flock protection. If they something that is out of the ordinary they sound an alarm without moving while the hens go under cover while they wait outside to see if they need to do anything to deter the predator.

Extra roosters are delicious. Rather I'd eat them than artificially bolster the hawk population and increase, subsequently, the population of ground squirrels, rats, mice, etc. In my mind it is far more natural for a human to eat a domestic chicken than a wild predator.

I, too, have struggled with the excess males produced in breeding and not being from a farming background I don't have the mind set, produced by necessity, to kill the male birds I don't need. I have felt like I haven't addressed this sufficiently in the past giving me some feelings of guilt. I don't name my birds but I know them all by sight. I try not to treat them like pets but they are something more than just livestock. So to hear another perspective, especially one so thoughtful, helps me with this dilemna.

 Thanks,
 Paula Cosentino

Great idea. I think I'll adopt this extra rooster keeping method for my flocks. Good post!
